Services Overview

Education

Education facilities are available at primary, secondary and tertiary level.  Our education facilities include;

  • Primary and secondary schools throughout the Free State, including farm schools in rural areas
  • Further Education and Training Facilities, including the Flavius Mareka FET College with campuses in Sasolburg, Mphohadi and Kroonstad, Goldfields FET College with its Tosa and Welkom campuses, Maluti FET College with its main campus in Phuthaditjhaba and seven other campuses and Motheo FET College with campuses in Bloemfontein and Thaba Nchu and
  • The University of the Free State (Bloemfontein and QwaQwa campuses) and the Central University of Technology (Bloemfontein and Welkom campuses)

Health

The Free State’s public health sector comprises of;

  • A Provincial Tertiary Hospital, namely the Universitas Hospital
  • Four Regional Hospitals, namely Bongani Regional Hospital (Welkom), Boitumelo Regional Hospital (Kroonstad), Dihlabeng Regional Hospital (Bethlehem) and the Pelonomi Regional Hospital (Bloemfontein)
  • District Hospitals / Hospital complexes, namely Elizabeth Ross District Hospital, Free State Psychiatric Complex, Katleho / Wynburg District Hospital Complex, Mesimaholo / Parys District Hospital Complex, Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital, National District Hospital, Phekolong / Nketoana District Hospital Complex, Thebe / Phumelela District Hospital Complex, Thusanong / Nala / Mohau District Hospital Complex, Tokollo / Mafube District Hospital Complex and the Botshabelo District Hospital.
  • Various Community Health Centres and Clinics throughout the Free State.

Libraries

Numerous public libraries are available in the Free State;

  • 18 in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality
  • 33 in the Fezile Dabi district
  • 33 in the Lejweleputswa district with two under construction in the towns of Soutpan and Riebeeckstad
  • 46 in the Thabo Mofutsanyane district with 3  under construction
  • 27 in the Xhariep with three under construction in the towns of Jacobsdal, Luckhoff and Smithfield.

Museums

There are various provincial museums, namely: Queen’s Fort Military Museum and the Old Presidency Museum (Bloemfontein) Transgariep Museum (Philippolis), Pellisier House Museum (Bethulie), Caledon River Museum (Smithfield), Chris van Niekerk Museum (Boshof), Pioneer Museum (Winburg), Agricultural Museum (Glen), Sarel Cilliers Museum (Kroonstad) and Riemland Museum (Heilbron).

The component also has two literature museums, namely the Sesotho and Afrikaans Literary Museums whilst the Basotho Cultural Village (BVC) in Qwaqwa is the only living heritage museum in the Free State.

The National Museum and the War Museum (both located in Bloemfontein) are national museums.

Police Stations

The provincial headquarters of the South African Police Service in the Free State is located in Bloemfontein. There are 110 police stations in the Free State province. 61 Police stations have Victim Support Rooms. The Free State Provincial Commissioner of Police is Lieutenant General KJ Sitole. At July 2012, 11603 sworn officers and 2796 civilians constituted the FS SAPS.

Correctional Services

Correctional Centres in the Free State fall within the Grootvlei, Goedemoed, Groenpunt and Kroonstad Areas as demarcated by the Department of Correctional Services;

  • Grootvlei Medium Correctional Centre
  • Grootvlei Maximum Correctional Centre
  • Brandfort Correctional Centre
  • Ladybrand Correctional Centre
  • Mangaung Correctional Centre
  • Winburg Correctional Centre
  • Boshof Correctional Centre
  • Wepener Correctional Centre

Testing Stations

There are a total of 52 testing stations that are well distributed in the Free State with 8 in the Motheo region, 14 in Xhariep, 10 in the Fezile Dabi region and 15 each in the Lejweleputswa and Thabo Mofutsanyane regions.
