Profile of MEC Public Works

 

Ms. Sisi Mabe, the MEC for Public Works in the Free State, was born in Phiritona, Heilbron. She became the MEC for Public Works in February 2011 and was previously the MEC responsible for Health.Mabe started her primary schooling at Phiritona Primary (Heilbron) before proceeding to Hlolohelo Primary (Welkom), and completed her Matric at Phiritona Secondary in Heilbron. She is a teacher by profession. She studied for a Primary Teachers’ Diploma (PTD) and later did a Higher Diploma in Education (HDE) at Sefikeng College of Education, QwaQwa. She holds an Honours Degree in Leadership and Management and a Master’s Diploma in Policy Studies and Governance (PGDE) from the University of the Free State.

She also holds a Certificate in Leadership from Rhodes University. Whilst employed as a teacher, Mabe was elected as an Executive Member of SADTU responsible for the Gender Desk. She was elected as a Regional Executive Member of the ANC and became the Regional Treasurer in the ANC Women’s League. She also served in the District Structure of the SACP.Mabe is a member of the Free State Legislature. She was elected as a member and the chairperson of the Provincial Judicial Committee Sitting in the Bloemfontein High Court in 2004 and 2008. She was a permanent delegate in the NCOP and the co-chairperson of the Joint Monitoring Committee on Quality of Life and Status of Women.

She was also a representative of the NCOP in the Magistrates Commission, which sits in Pretoria under Judge Ngoepe. In 2004, Mabe was elected as a member and chairperson of the Provincial Judicial Committee sitting in the Bloemfontein High Court. She also served as a member of the Local Government and Housing Portfolio committee.Mabe is currently a Member of the Executive Council of the Free State and a member of ANC Women’s League Working Committee. She is the chairperson of the ANC Women’s League NEC Policy and Governance and a deployee of the ANC Women’s League for Northern Cape. Mabe participated in a conference based on Initiatives from the Beijing Platform for Action in New York (United Nations), and the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Brazzaville, Congo on Issues of Women in Politics. She also presented a paper in Namibia on the Progress on Education in South Africa regarding the Girl Child. She was an observer at the World Trade Organization Summit held in Geneva on Economic Development of Developing Countries.
