Mr. M.J.Zwane

Mr. Mosebenzi Joseph Zwane was born in Vrede in the Eastern Free State. He obtained his secondary teacher’s diploma from the South African Teachers College in Pretoria, and a certificate in executive leadership municipal development from the University of Pretoria. Currently, he is studying for a BComm in financial management at the University of South Africa. Mr. Zwane got involved in politics in the early 1980s as a member of the Thembelihle Youth Congress. He subsequently joined the ANC’s Thembelihle branch.

He is one of the founding members of the first ANC branch in Roadside, were he taught at a farm school. Mr. Zwane served in the regional executive committee of the Frankfort region in the early 1990s.He then became the first secretary of the Frankfort region that became the Thabo Mofutsanyana region, preceding the amalgamation of local councils. He became a regional executive committee member of the Thabo Mofutsanyana region and subsequently became its chairperson. Mr. Zwane has been the regional chairperson of the Thabo Mofutsanyana ANC region since 2006.

During the period of transition from the old local government system to the current democratic state, he was a councillor for the Riemland Transitional Local Council, and served in the Eastern Free State District. Mr. Zwane became a councillor in the Phumelela Local Municipality in 2000 and then was seconded to the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality where he served as a member of the mayoral committee for finance. He became the executive mayor of the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality in 2006.

Mr. Zwane served in various structures, including the South African Local Government Association in the Free State. He served as a member of the Human Resource Working Group, both at provincial and national level. At the time Mr. Zwane left local government, he was the chief whip for the SALGA-FS Executive Committee. He was the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements in April 2009. He is the former MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development. He is currently the MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.
